What is a Gourd?
A gourd is a vined plant and is related to melons, squashes and pumpkins. Because of their hard shells gourds are often used for ornamental purposes or for vessels like bowls, pots or cups. Gourds come in many shapes and sizes. The exterior of a gourd is like wood, which is why it lends itself so easily to wood burning, ink dyes, acrylic paints, oils and waxes.
The process of sowing, growing, harvesting and drying gourds is a long process. Drying gourds can take from 6 months to a year. Because no two gourds are alike the curing and drying time can vary...that is why they are so special.
